Match My Freak

What do I even mean when I say Match My Freak? To me, it’s about unmasking to the point where I can geek about things I would never mention otherwise and having someone meet me at my level and mirror that same energy. It’s not a groundbreaking or revolutionary idea but it’s still hard to come by these days.

I thought this poem was going to start off wondering if someone would match my energy and then become a critique of self and past relationships, much like every other poem I’ve written because I’m a one-trick pony.

Okay, I'm not a one-trick pony because I can write love and growth and things outside of heartbreak and sadness, I just find it hard to. Well, I managed to tap into enough delusion, with the help of old poems, to keep this piece romantic throughout. This isn’t my best work, but it’s a combination of two different pieces and reworked to keep a certain flow.

In reality, there is no one matching my freak. I repeat, I am single! Which is honestly for the best because I sit and write sad heartbreak poems and tell all of SubStack and whoever listens to the podcast about my love life (never in a timely manner though; you’re always at least a month behind. I have to leave time for myself to process before I can get vulnerable with you).

THE POEM

Get off my timeline and in my messages please
Get out my dreams and into my sheets
But the real, honest truth is
I don’t want someone to match my freak.
Match my ambition.
Match my creativity.
Match my desire to see all the good in everyone please.
I just need to feel a little less alone,
Kinda just desiring someone to call home.
My heart is in my art and they're all I can write about,
Writing a poem so cute, it could be wedding vows.
Giving them all their flowers, they deserve to take a bow.
They say they want me the way pain wants pleasure
That they'll cherish me like hidden treasure.
Has my energy finally been matched?
Staring into their eyes
I ask myself, taking a step back.
Heart skipping a beat, butterflies fluttering around,
I love allowing them space to ramble about.
Listening to their voice after a long day
Because they are my favorite safe space.

Anyone who's ever matched my energy has ended up being one of the worst experiences, normally because I develop such an intense attachment to them only to be absolutely soul-crushed when they disappoint me. I've always been bad at setting expectations within my relationships, especially romantic ones, but one should never expect a betrayal from those they care about. And among my reflection, I can't help but wonder if they see me in a similar light. If I'm just as evil in their eyes? If this is karma for the evils of my past? Or if it's just character-building lore?

THE PROMPTS

With all of this lovely reflection, I will leave you with some poetry prompts to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Creativity and Love: Craft a poem that delves into the relationship between your creative passions and your romantic desires. How does your art reflect your feelings for someone special, and how do they inspire your creativity?

  • Finding a Home in Another: Write a poem that explores the concept of finding a "home" in another person. What qualities make someone feel like home to you, and how do they provide comfort and security in your life?

  • The Balance of Pain and Pleasure: Create a poem that examines the complex relationship between pain and pleasure in love. How do these opposing emotions shape your romantic experiences and understanding of intimacy?
